乾隆皇帝平日公務(wù)繁忙，日理萬機(jī)，休閑的時候就常找一些學(xué)識淵博的王公大臣，到御花園陪他論古道今，飲酒作樂。

有一天，兩位情同兄弟的大臣紀(jì)曉嵐和劉墉，一起在御花園里陪乾隆皇帝。

紀(jì)曉嵐問劉墉：“你們山東的蘿卜最大的有多大？”

劉墉一聽，喜形于色，興致勃勃地比劃著自己家鄉(xiāng)遠(yuǎn)近聞名的大蘿卜。

紀(jì)曉嵐頗不以為然地回答：“你們山東的蘿卜再大，也不可能比我們直隸的大?！?br />
劉墉當(dāng)然不服氣，因為誰都知道山東的蘿卜暢銷各地，是出了名的大。于是兩人你一言、我一語地爭論不休。

乾隆皇帝在旁邊聽了覺得很好笑，說：“這是什么事情嘛！還需要如此這般地爭來爭去。你們兩個，明日準(zhǔn)備好各自認(rèn)為最大的蘿卜，帶上朝來讓大家評一評?！?br />
第二天，劉墉帶著一個大蘿卜上朝，所有朝臣看到這么大的一個蘿卜，個個贊嘆不已。

乾隆風(fēng)趣夸張地問紀(jì)曉嵐：“你的大蘿卜在哪兒？把你的大蘿卜抬進(jìn)來吧！”

誰也沒想到，紀(jì)曉嵐從袖口內(nèi)掏出來一個又瘦又小的蘿卜。

大臣們看了不禁吃了一驚，議論紛紛，不知紀(jì)曉嵐葫蘆里賣的是什么藥。

乾隆也有些納悶了，對紀(jì)曉嵐說：“你這是開的什么玩笑?！?br />
只見紀(jì)曉嵐不慌不忙，用非常謙恭、誠懇的語氣說：“回皇上，我讓人找遍了我們直隸全省，才找到了這個最大的蘿卜?；噬?，直隸的土壤較為貧瘠，再加上近半年來天災(zāi)不斷，所以農(nóng)作物普遍收成不佳，百姓無法繳納太多的糧食。請皇上明鑒?！?br />
乾隆立刻明白，紀(jì)曉嵐是在借機(jī)反映全省的經(jīng)濟(jì)困難。于是，想了片刻之后說：“直隸窮就少納糧，山東富就多納些糧吧！”

大道理：

足智多謀且胸懷寬廣的劉墉，明知自己吃了虧，可并不生紀(jì)曉嵐的氣，而且還稱贊他用“迂回曲折”的幽默方式，在談笑中解決了平時不易解決的大問題。
